During the initial visit, I engage your child in norm-based tests and other activities that are designed to give me information about their strengths and challenges. These may include:
Fine Motor Assessment: I may assess your child’s fine motor skills, which include activities that involve precise movements of the hands and fingers. I will observe hand grasp and strength, bilateral hand skills (using both hands together), visual-motor skills (coordination between vision and hand movements), and upper body coordination.
Pre-writing & Handwriting Skills: I may assess your child’s handwriting abilities, including factors like body posture, pencil grasp, letter formation, copying sentences, and letter memory. This helps me to identify specific areas of challenge and guides the development of strategies to improve handwriting skills.
Observations: I will closely observe your child during play activities, assessing their turn-taking skills, functional motor skills (using hands and fingers to perform everyday tasks), visual attention, and participation in structured learning activities.
Self-Regulation observations: By incorporating play-based activities into the evaluation process, I can determine your child’s ability to regulate their emotions, take turns, manage transitions, and adapt their behavior to different social and learning situations. I can observe how your child responds to challenges, demonstrates self-control, and engages with others during play.
By conducting these assessments and observations, I can gain a comprehensive understanding of your child’s abilities, challenges, and specific areas that need to be addressed. This information forms the foundation for developing therapy goals and designing individualized interventions to support your child’s development and progress.
In-person evaluations typically take an hour. Information from the initial phone consultation, in-person observations, parent report, standardized testing information, and a written evaluation report are all part of the initial evaluation process. Sessions are weekly and are 55 minutes in length. The number of visits are based on progress and on-going collaboration between therapist and family.
I aim to assist in your child’s growth by working together with other professionals involved in their life. This might include guiding you through the Individualized Educational Plan process if it’s your first time, referring you to other helpful experts, or connecting with your child’s teacher to exchange information, discuss strategies, and support learning between school and home.
